Sorry, Abdun, but my experience is such that I can say categorically that formal/classical Arabic is NOT understood easily everywhere in the Arabic-speaking world. Words can be different, and not every Arabic-speaking person uses ‘perfect’ grammar. Sometimes, one needs to learn and understand the way people speak in their daily lives, rather than how they ‘should’ speak, according to a textbook. The same applies with English (my native tongue), where speakers rarely speak as one might expect if one had learned the language strictly from a textbook.

You can request for this course to the administration once you complete your Quran reading with Tajweed course online. We will provide you the best Quran teacher for the purpose of Tafsir and translation. Learn the Arabic alphabet. The Arabic script seems daunting at first, and some people try to avoid learning it by relying on transliterations of Arabic words. This merely stores up problems for later; it is much better to ignore transliterations and use the script from the start. The best you can do is to buy or borrow a book at the library, since this is a long and difficult project.
Colloquial Arabic. If you are planning on living in the Arab World or dealing with a specific Arab region or country, Modern Standard Arabic on its own is unlikely to meet all your needs. Arabs speak regional dialects as their mother tongue, and the differences between dialects can be significant enough to cause mutual unintelligibility. Broadly speaking, there are five broad families of dialects, each with sub-dialects according to country, city, neighbourhood, and even religion: Gulf Arabic, Mesopotamian Arabic, Levantine Arabic, Egyptian Arabic, and Maghrebi Arabic.
It would be a waste of time if you are not planning to use it for work or business relations. You would be better off learning Spanish or Chinese, two of the most common languages found in the America today. If you learn Chinese that is not only gravy, but sets you apart from the crowd. Not many Americans can speak Chinese. It will be more and more in demand much like Spanish

Great post, I love your approach and emphasis on assimilation. I’m starting to learn Arabic for work, I’m in the US and my company is soon opening offices in Dubai and I’d like to position myself for a future working there. My question is if I should focus on Emirati Arabic. I have friends from Syria and I LOVE the feeling & sound of Levantine, and the resources are pretty plentiful for Levantine. Aside from Youtube, Emirati Arabic feels slim on resources. Would Levantine serve me well as I’m getting into Dubai or would I be better served to make do with the Emirati resources available? Thanks! –Joe

Unlike the layered verbiage you’ll contend with when you’re ready to read novelists like Naguib Mahfouz or Ahlam Mosteghanemi, you have a chance at understanding the meaning of Tamer’s sentences. For example, in “النمور في اليوم العاشر” (Tigers on the Tenth Day), the parallel sentence structures give you a chance to follow the progression of the story from day one to day ten as the tiger gives up the pieces of his freedom and dignity. Hey, I didn’t say they were happy stories.

A mostly unknown fact is that the Arabic language is the most widely spoken Afroasiatic language. The Afroasiatic language family spreads across the majority of Africa and the Middle East and is made of 300 languages and dialects. A more popular fact among language lovers is that Arabic is a Semitic language much like Hebrew and Aramaic. This is good news for Hebrew speakers because these two languages belong to the Central Semitic language group and have much in common. For example, both Arabic and Hebrew use abjads. An adjab is a system in which each letter stands for a consonant rather than a vowel. This means that when you write in Arabic or Hebrew you have to provide the vowels by writing vowel marks.

The Arabic used in the Quran, or the Islamic holy book, is called classical or Quranic Arabic. It is slightly different than the modern standard Arabic that is predominantly used in everyday life. The major difference is in some of the wording. Students can learn Quranic Arabic online and begin to get a whole new perspective on the language. Students interested in taking these Quranic or Islamic Arabic courses are encouraged to have a firm grasp of modern standard Arabic beforehand.

Bayyinah (Paid Subscription) - Many people know about this program, but the thing about its online Qur'an and Arabic courses (like Arabic With Husna) is that they are designed to be done on your own time. This means that, unless you join the Bayyinah classes on campus, there are no live online classes available where you are forced to do weekly assignments or chat with a teacher about your progress. But the online courses are great either way, and they are neutral in terms of religion (they don't support one group or another).

I assume already having experienced the ‘learning language through culture’ once with Spanish (actively studying the language and living in South America), had already opened up that “aha-feeling” and created new “rooms in the brain” for new sounds, grammar, rhythm of talking and… That is was actually possible incorporating a new language in once’s life.

Arabic (اللغة العربية) is an Afro-Asiatic or Semitic language closely related to Maltese, Hebrew, and Aramaic as well as Tigrinya and Amharic, and is spoken in an array of colorful dialects. Arabic is the official language of 26 Middle Eastern and North African countries spanning Yemen to Lebanon to the Sudan to Tunisia, it is an official language of the the Arab League, the African Union, NATO, and the United Nations, and it is the liturgical and intellectual language of Islam. People all over the world study Arabic for a variety of reasons: work, travel, family, heritage, religion, wanting to travel to an Arab country, marriage or friendship with an Arab, or simply as a hobby. To learn Arabic, determine which type you wish to learn, study the alphabet, get a good Arabic dictionary, and use some key language learning tools.
the fact is we have to learn the MSA as it the language of teaching and learning , reading and writing, and the language we use everyday in our life, we cannot write it. however some people use it in the social media, it is very frustrating and can hardly understand what they mean. in my opinion you should learn MSA if you really want to learn the Arabic language, as MSA unites the Arab world together. If they can’t understand when they communicate in their dialect, then they use MSA instead. Each of the Arab counties use different terms and expressions which it is hard to understand. Hence, learn and speak the MSA and if they don’t understand you it means they are illiterate, and there are not much of them. and those who laugh about hearing you talking in MSA, that’s because they are not used to hear it more often, it is mostly used in formal situations.

The material ranges from absolutely introductory tutorials to tutorials for even the most advanced literatures. Both the absolute basics of the language are covered, such as the alphabet and verb conjugation, as well as very advanced material, such as Arabic poetry and deep etymology. It is an extraordinary supplement to Arabic language courses and is an invaluable and authoritative resource for Classical Arabic.
