the fact is we have to learn the MSA as it the language of teaching and learning , reading and writing, and the language we use everyday in our life, we cannot write it. however some people use it in the social media, it is very frustrating and can hardly understand what they mean. in my opinion you should learn MSA if you really want to learn the Arabic language, as MSA unites the Arab world together. If they can’t understand when they communicate in their dialect, then they use MSA instead. Each of the Arab counties use different terms and expressions which it is hard to understand. Hence, learn and speak the MSA and if they don’t understand you it means they are illiterate, and there are not much of them. and those who laugh about hearing you talking in MSA, that’s because they are not used to hear it more often, it is mostly used in formal situations.

A mostly unknown fact is that the Arabic language is the most widely spoken Afroasiatic language. The Afroasiatic language family spreads across the majority of Africa and the Middle East and is made of 300 languages and dialects. A more popular fact among language lovers is that Arabic is a Semitic language much like Hebrew and Aramaic. This is good news for Hebrew speakers because these two languages belong to the Central Semitic language group and have much in common. For example, both Arabic and Hebrew use abjads. An adjab is a system in which each letter stands for a consonant rather than a vowel. This means that when you write in Arabic or Hebrew you have to provide the vowels by writing vowel marks.

Nils, you bring up a good point. I think the article was saying that speaking it as much and as early as possible is more beneficial and since MSA is more of a written language (in a sense), it is crucial to pick a dialect. I could be wrong, but that’s how I read it. I think I agree with the author on this. I’m still learning grammar, but I can speak quite a bit of Egyptian Arabic. God bless!

Colloquial Arabic. If you are planning on living in the Arab World or dealing with a specific Arab region or country, Modern Standard Arabic on its own is unlikely to meet all your needs. Arabs speak regional dialects as their mother tongue, and the differences between dialects can be significant enough to cause mutual unintelligibility. Broadly speaking, there are five broad families of dialects, each with sub-dialects according to country, city, neighbourhood, and even religion: Gulf Arabic, Mesopotamian Arabic, Levantine Arabic, Egyptian Arabic, and Maghrebi Arabic.

Very nice tips I use language apps and almost every last person wants to teach me MSA I’m like no I want to learn Levetine dielect. They keep pushing MSA tho and will even lie and say ok I will teach you Syrian but don’t know that I know a few phrases in MSA and Syrian and they end up teaching me MSA 😂 Then I tell them “well that’s how you would say it in MSA I thought it was said like this *****” and they go “o it’s all the same” 😒… Ugh… and I’m having a problem with speaking it’s like I can understand but I can’t speak back or remember how to say any words or put sentence together… it’s like I’m learning and understand but not talking..

Great post, I love your approach and emphasis on assimilation. I’m starting to learn Arabic for work, I’m in the US and my company is soon opening offices in Dubai and I’d like to position myself for a future working there. My question is if I should focus on Emirati Arabic. I have friends from Syria and I LOVE the feeling & sound of Levantine, and the resources are pretty plentiful for Levantine. Aside from Youtube, Emirati Arabic feels slim on resources. Would Levantine serve me well as I’m getting into Dubai or would I be better served to make do with the Emirati resources available? Thanks! –Joe

Being one of the oldest spoken languages on Earth, Arabic has a rich history and influenced different languages worldwide. For example, Maltese has been greatly influenced by Arabic. This is because the Arabs conquered Sicily, Malta’s neighbor island, in the 9th century. But Arabic also influenced the western world with words like “admiral”, “coffee” and “giraffe” which have Arabic origins.

Yes yes yes, I went through the same journey with MSA although as you say, after a year I did totally get the shape and grammatical structure of the language – just could barely speak a word! I then focused on Lebanese Arabic at a great language school in Beirut called Saifi – and now I can speak to an advanced level. I WISH more Arabic teachers would just give up on the MSA – whenever I speak about this issue to people it's always Arabic people who disagree and say NO you must learn MSA even when they themselves probably forgot all the grammar years ago!

Arabic is a native language for over 300 million people, being an official language in 25 countries. The largest number of Arabic native speakers can be found in Egypt followed by Algeria, Sudan, Iraq and Morocco. In total, there are over 385 million Arabic speakers worldwide which makes Arabic the 4th most spoken language on Earth. Basically, 5.2% of world's population speaks this language. That’s why learning Arabic is definitely a smart choice.

One of the most popular actresses speaking Arabic is Natalie Portman. The actress starring in movies like “Black Swan” and “V for Vendetta” is a natural language learner also speaking Japanese, German, French, English and Hebrew. Regarding Arabic, she probably chose to learn the language because of her heritage. She was born in Jerusalem, Israel, in 1981 and she later moved to the United States to become a movie star. Surprisingly, Salma Hayek speaks Arabic as well. Not many people know this, but Salma is half Arab with her father being Lebanese so she had her own Arabic teacher at home.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to learn Arabic by transcribing words instead of learning the alphabet first. Think about how we learned English back in school. First, you learn your letters, then you form those letters into words, then you learn how to form sentences, and then you learn more about proper syntax and grammar. Taking shortcuts will only slow you down.

Reading is a much better way to gather new vocabulary than encountering new words out of context. In the Finbo the Whale story, for example, I finally got a grasp on spelling حوت (whale), which was a word I’d heard before but struggled with. Which letter H? ح or ه? Which letter T? ت or ط? By reading it several times in context, the correct spelling now just “looks right.”
At Mondly, we know that the secret to fast language acquisition is focusing on core words. These common words are the building blocks of your core vocabulary. That’s why you don't need to learn 1 million Arabic words, just the ones natives use every day. In reality, you can be fluent and articulate with a vocabulary of only 2500 words and phrases. As a result, the time and energy required to learn a second language is significantly reduced.

I am learning MSA and I study grammar, listen intently to news videos and make transcripts if there’s no subtitles, and read them out, trying to mimic the pronunciation. My reading and writing is pretty good. I have one book on colloquial Egyptian – “a transformational grammar of spoken egyptian” by Hilary Wise which has stuff resembling a book on thermodynamics. I also had a book on colloquial Iraqi but I seem to have lost it.
I am writing to highly recommend Al Azhar Quran Teaching. My two sons have been making excellent strides in Quran recitation and Islamic studies. We have had the pleasure of witnessing our sons accomplish their goals, and it’s a priceless feeling. Hesitant at first, not knowing how the children would react to the new form of teaching, we were blown away when my children enjoyed their new and talented teacher’s company learn quran online .
