What is an online course in Arabic? Online language courses have become readily available and provide an interactive experience for students. Qur’an is one of those elements that will safeguard a Muslim from the torments of the Grave. A Muslim who recites it regularly shall get the benefits in this World and in the hereafter. The rewards are immense for those who recite it regularly and the torment is equally horrible for those who ignore it. If a Muslim realizes this, he will never let a day pass unless he recites the Glorious Qur’an.

Learn how to use an Arabic dictionary. Words in Arabic dictionaries are normally listed under their three-letter roots. So you would look for istiqbaal ("reception") under "q" because the root letters are q-b-l. Getting used to this takes a little practice but it is not particularly difficult because additions to the roots follow set patterns. Something similar happens in English: "unaccustomed", for example, is actually "un-a-custom-ed".

The Hifz (Memorization) and its retention and safeguarding in the chests is one of the prominent Sunnahs found in the lives of The Sahaaba and our Righteous Predecessors. This preservation and passing on of the recitation was done in the strictest of manners without letting any deviations or differences to creep in. The Rules of Recitation, i.e. Tajweed is a result of these efforts.

I believe a lot of native teachers don’t appreciate dialects because this is what we were taught. Arabs are taught that the dialects are a cheap way to make ‘real’ Arabic less important, and that dialects are merely made-up languages whose origin is Classical Arabic. Whether this claim is true or not, we all tend to believe so. Another reason is perhaps because we are never taught our dialects. We acquire them from our parents, so we are usually not aware of their grammatical rules.

I am learning MSA and I study grammar, listen intently to news videos and make transcripts if there’s no subtitles, and read them out, trying to mimic the pronunciation. My reading and writing is pretty good. I have one book on colloquial Egyptian – “a transformational grammar of spoken egyptian” by Hilary Wise which has stuff resembling a book on thermodynamics. I also had a book on colloquial Iraqi but I seem to have lost it.

One way for beginners to practice a foreign language is to watch children’s television programs in that language. The vocabulary is simpler, and the educational nature of those programs can be extremely helpful to new students of any age. As you gain proficiency, another tactic is to watch movies in the foreign language with English subtitles on. That way you gain a better “ear” for listening, and the subtitles give you the translation for what you’re hearing. Eventually you’ll be able to switch off the subtitles and still understanding what is being said.
